The Big Question: Employment vs Self-Employment in the UK
Imagine you had a choice. Would you work for an employer or work for yourself? This question faces thousands of UK professionals every day. It’s especially common for those in their twenties and thirties.
If you dream of owning a business, what steps would you take today? These aren’t just hypothetical questions. They’re real-life decisions for UK job seekers, career changers, and aspiring entrepreneurs.
Today’s TikTok livestream at @careeradviceuk examined these questions. The 4 AM GMT session provides practical career advice for anyone considering self-employment or small business ownership.
Real Stories: From Business Dreams to Reality
This morning’s livestream featured an exciting update. A regular visitor shared their small business launch journey. Their story shows the challenges many UK entrepreneurs face.
The viewer was at a crossroads. Their loan and funding applications were denied. This is common. Around 40% of small business loan applications face rejection in the UK.
So they had a tough choice. Use saved capital to build the business now? Or work as a contractor to generate more funds first? This would minimize financial risk.
The IR35 Umbrella Worker Route
@careeradviceuk shared valuable experience working under IR35 umbrella arrangements. This knowledge is crucial for anyone considering contract work in the UK.
An umbrella worker sits between contractor and employee status. Understanding this is vital for UK career planning.
Tax Treatment: From a tax standpoint, umbrella workers are treated like employees. PAYE deductions come from their earnings. But legally, they have fewer rights than permanent employees.
How It Works: An agency finds job placements for the umbrella worker. They contract with the hiring organisation. Once the worker secures a position, they use a payroll service.
This service provides tax advice. It processes PAYE payments and manages taxes. It also handles pension contributions.
The Financial Reality: @careeradviceuk explained something sobering. After all fees and taxes are paid, contractors typically take home just over 50% of their gross rate.
These deductions include:
- Employer’s National Insurance
- Apprenticeship levy
- Holiday pay accrual
- Umbrella company fees
A contract at ยฃ400 per day might result in ยฃ200-220 take-home pay. Understanding these realities is essential before considering contract work.
Small Business Funding: When Banks Say No
The viewer explained their innovative business concept. They were developing a mobile app. It could generate ยฃ1.50 per active user.
Even 1,000 active users would create ยฃ1,500 monthly revenue. That’s a solid business foundation. But developing and testing the app would cost several thousand pounds.
The Funding Dilemma: To get this capital, they’d need to work as a contractor. They didn’t want to deplete their savings completely. Using contract work to fund business ventures is increasingly common among UK founders.
The Question: What would you do? Risk your savings on an unproven concept? Or take the slower but safer route of building capital through contract work?
Career Advice for Tomorrow’s Business Leaders
Law Degree vs Business Degree: What’s Better?
A young viewer in college asked an important question. They want to own an estate agency. Should they pursue law or business?
@careeradviceuk asked clarifying questions. What are your career goals? Your existing skills? Your timeline?
Then came an insightful perspective. A law degree is essentially a specialized business degree. It just has additional legal expertise.
The Law Degree Path:
Owning an estate agency with a law background has advantages. You’d understand property legal requirements. You’d know contracts inside out.
Advantages include:
- Understanding property law and conveyancing
- Knowledge of contract law
- Familiarity with estate agency regulations
- Ability to navigate legal disputes
- Understanding landlord and tenant law
You could become a solicitor. Property law could be your specialty. After years of practice, you could start your own estate agency. You’d bring credibility competitors might lack.
The Business Degree Alternative:
But @careeradviceuk made an important point. Small business owners wear many hats. Even with a law degree, you’d likely still hire lawyers for business legal work.
A law degree means you’d lack formal training in:
- Marketing and digital strategies
- Financial management
- Business leadership
- Sales techniques
- Operations management
- Human resources
- Strategic planning
Learning these skills is possible. But it requires additional training or costly trial and error.
The Verdict:
After discussing both options, @careeradviceuk reached a conclusion. Both degrees offer value. But given practical realities, a business degree is likely more practical.
Why? Most estate agency owners outsource legal work anyway. A business degree provides:
- Understanding of all business functions
- Business planning experience
- Essential marketing knowledge
- Financial management skills
- Team leadership training
- Professional networking opportunities
Practical Advice for Career Changers
Breaking Into Retail Without Experience
A viewer asked a common question. Why wasn’t their CV generating retail interviews? This is frequent for career changers.
@careeradviceuk asked questions. The person had no retail experience but wanted to enter the sector. Given livestream time constraints, full CV review wasn’t possible.
But the advice was valuable. Use a functional CV format instead of chronological.
Understanding Functional CVs:
A functional CV emphasizes skills over work history. It’s effective for:
- Career changers entering new industries
- Recent graduates
- People returning after career breaks
- Those with employment gaps
- Professionals transitioning sectors
For retail roles without experience, highlight transferable skills:
- Customer service from any role
- Communication abilities
- Problem-solving skills
- Cash handling
- Working under pressure
- Team collaboration
- Reliability and professionalism

Imagine for a moment you had a choice between working for an employer or working for yourself, what would you do? If you imagine yourself owning a business in the future, what steps would you take today to ensure your dream came true?
Today’s livestream on closely examined some aspects of that dream. This livestream had a regular but sporradic visitor who came by today’s livestream to give an update on their small business launch. The explained they were at a crossroads their loan and funding were denied. So, they faced a challenge to use some saved capital to build the business or work as a contractor for a bit to get some money.
@careeradviceuk shared their experience of working under IR35 umbrella. An umbrella worker is type of worker that sits between contractor and employee. From a tax standpoint they are treated like an employee but from a legal perspective they have less legal rights than an employee. This means, for example, an umbrella worker has an agency that finds them the job and contracts with the organisation. Once the umbrella worker has a job they use a payroll service that provides tax advice, pays their taxes, and pension. He, @careeradviceuk, went on to explain once all of the fees and taxes are paid, makes just over 50% of what they were actually paid.
The viewer continued to explain they were developing an app that could generate about ยฃ1.50 per active viewer and could generate a revenue stream for them but it would cost them several thousand pounds to develop and test. For them to get the money would mean working to build their because they did not want to dive into the capital they saved. So, what would you do in this situation?
Next, a young viewer in college and looking to go to university wanted to know what was a better choice between law and business degree if they wanted to own their own estate business? @careeradviceuk ask them a few questions. Then @careeradviceuk explained that a law degree, in essence, is a business degree. Owning a estate agency with a background in law could mean the individual would have an understanding of the legal requirements for selling a house and understand the contracts. They could become a solicitor whereby one of their non-contentious area is property law and they could after a few years of practicing take that experience to develop an estate business. However, @careeradviceuk, felt owning a small business meant ‘wearing many different hats,” and handling the legal along with finance and marketing, to name a few responsibilities, meant that they would have to hire a law office to handle their legal work. Also, having a law degree meant they would lack skills like marketing, finance, management, and accounting to be able to manage the business. Learning the skills is possible but it would mean having to undergo some training to get the skills they need. After discussing both degrees, @careeradviceuk felt both degrees were good degrees for their idea but given the reality that they probably would not have the time to devote to the legal end of an estate business that a business degree, in @careeradviceuk, would probably the better choice.
After that discussion a few minutes remained where @careeradviceuk was asked two seperate questions. First question, the viewer asked why their cv was not generating interviews for retail? @careeradviceuk ask a few questions discovering that the individual had no retail experience but wanted to work in the sector. @careeradviceuk advised constrainsts of a question and answer forum, the best @careeradviceuk could do is give some tips and suggested they try using a functional cv. @careeradviceuk could give some tips; however, if they required more help then it was best to get in contact using @careeradviceuk profile information for a discussion.
Second and final question regarded why @careeradviceuk livestreams at 4 AM GMT. @careeradviceuk explained that 4 AM GMT is the time they get the most views and the most engagement.
