Four questions. Four honest answers. The 4 AM Careers Clinic on 24 March 2026 covered networking, job boards, apprenticeships, and the military. Here is what came up — and what it means for your career right now.
How to Network for a Job
Career StrategyMost people ask where to network. Today’s question was better: how do you actually do it? That shift matters. A venue is easy to name. A strategy takes more thought.
Start With Your Warm Network
Your warmest contacts are your fastest route to a job. Think about former colleagues, managers, clients, and friends. You already have a relationship with these people — which means you can reach out today. No introduction needed. No awkward cold message.
Research consistently shows that referrals and word-of-mouth account for a large share of UK job placements. Most roles are never advertised publicly. Your network is your shortcut to those hidden opportunities.
LinkedIn: Your Professional Home Base
LinkedIn is the strongest digital networking tool available. Join sector-specific groups. Follow leaders in your field. Comment on their posts consistently. Message people directly — but keep it relevant and personal.
Building connections takes time. Be patient. Consistent activity pays off over weeks, not days.
Networking Events: The Hybrid Approach
Face-to-face events sit between your warm contacts and cold outreach. You meet people in person. You have a real conversation. You hear about opportunities before they are posted online.
Events may not be as fast as reaching out to someone who already knows you — but they move faster than building a digital relationship from scratch.
Networking strategy is something we cover directly at Leap Forward Careers. If you are unsure how to approach it for your sector, a free 15-minute call can point you in the right direction.
Best Job Boards for Trade Roles
Job SearchA specific question came up about which job boards to use for trades. Three platforms came up as consistently strong choices:
-
CV-Library
One of the UK’s largest job platforms. Strong coverage across trades, technical, and industrial sectors.
-
Hays
Well-known for skilled trades and technical placements. Used by many UK employers for specialist hiring.
-
Blue Arrow
Widely used in industrial, logistics, and manufacturing. Particularly strong for volume trade roles.
A Smarter Search Method
Try this: type “[job title] jobs in [your town]” into Google. This returns job boards and agencies that hire for those specific roles in your area — including specialist agencies you may not know about.
Also search directly for companies that hire the role you want and check their own careers pages. This cuts out the middleman and puts you closer to the decision-maker — and closer to a response.

Apprenticeships in 2026: Worth It?
2026 UpdateApprenticeships are changing significantly this year. But are they right for you? The honest answer: it depends on the person. Apprenticeships are not a one-size-fits-all solution.
Big Changes Coming This Year
Key 2026 updates to know: Apprentice minimum wage rises to £8.00/hr from April 2026. From August 2026, small employers pay nothing toward training costs for apprentices under 25 — the government covers it in full. New short courses in AI, engineering, and digital skills also launch from April 2026.
353,500 apprenticeship starts in England in 2024/25. Over half of those — 51% — were people aged 25 and over. Apprenticeships are not just for school leavers. Many people use them to retrain mid-career.
Honest Pros and Cons
✅ What Works
- Earn while you learn — no full-time study
- No university debt
- New short AI and digital courses from April 2026
- Small employers fully funded for under-25s from August
- ~85% of completers move into employment
⚠️ Things to Consider
- No guaranteed job at the end
- Can limit options in certain fields
- Degree typically offers broader portability
- Quality varies widely between employers
- Some roles disguised as apprenticeships
The key question is this: does this apprenticeship lead somewhere you actually want to go? If the answer is yes, it may be the right step.
Not sure if an apprenticeship fits your goals? A free 15-minute call with Leap Forward Careers can help you think it through — no pressure, no obligation.
📞 Book a Free CallMilitary Careers: Is It Right for You?
Career ChangeThis question comes up occasionally at the clinic. Today it came from a public sector medic who had received an offer to join a branch of the armed services.
There is a genuine belief at Leap Forward Careers that the military builds skills that are genuinely hard to match anywhere else. Leadership. Organisation. Planning. Discipline. Personal development under real pressure. These are qualities that employers notice — and rarely find.
What a Military Career Offers
The UK military provides a clear career structure from day one. Entry requires passing medical and security checks. Once in, personnel receive structured training and ongoing development — the kind that shows on a CV for life.
Launched in March 2026, this is a paid one-year programme for under-25s — no long-term commitment required. Participants earn around £26,000 and gain hands-on experience across the Army, Royal Navy, and RAF. Skills covered include leadership, logistics, engineering, and teamwork. It is an opportunity to experience military life before deciding whether to continue.
Transferable Skills That Employers Want
Veterans bring skills that civilian employers value — and often struggle to find. The challenge is not a lack of skills. It is translating those skills into language that employers recognise on a CV and in an interview.
The Medic’s Question — and the Answer
Today’s question came from someone weighing a real decision. The advice given: look at what you want to gain from the military, and what you want your career to look like when you return to civilian life. If the military can provide the development, structure, and leadership experience you are missing — and if that aligns with your long-term goals — it may be the right move.
It is a personal decision. But it deserves careful thought, not a quick answer.
